Police obtained a seven-day remand order for a suspect in the kidnapping of two girls over the weekend.
The self-employed man is alleged to have also raped one of them.
The order was obtained from Alor Setar Magistrate Court Registrar Datin Chan Lee Fong yesterday.
The case received widespread publicity here over the dramatic events that led to the girls' rescue.
The victims, aged 14 and 12, were rescued by their father who had gone on a 50km frantic search for them on Sunday.
The 39-year-old had scoured the districts of Pendang, Yan, Kota Setar and Kuala Kedah in search of his daughters.
The girls were believed to have been kidnapped at 5.30pm on Saturday near a sundry shop not far from their home in Kampung Perepat, Kota Sarang Semut.
The kidnapper bundled the girls into his car as they were walking to the shop before taking them on a joy ride to Yan and Pendang districts. He is believed to have raped the older girl in Tokai, Pendang.
Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Adzaman Mohd Jan said the suspect was under remand to facilitate investigation.
“He is being investigated under Sections 363 and 376 of the Penal Code for kidnapping and rape, respectively.”
