A Singaporean navy regular, Lieutenant Benedict Ang Yong Chuean, a trainee at
the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra was arrested on Sunday
after he allegedly committed two indecent acts on a female cadet.
The 21-year-old pleaded not guilty in court today.
MINDEF’s Director of Public Affairs Colonel Kenneth Liow said: “The Singapore Armed Forces take a serious view of the conduct and discipline of its servicemen and will take appropriate action where necessary.
As the case is pending court proceedings, it would not be appropriate for the Ministry of Defence to comment on the case.”
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Ang’s lawyer pleaded for the court to dismiss a condition that his client report to the police every weekend since he had already handed over his passport to the authorities.
Ang, who is out on bail at the moment, will be back in court in August.
This latest incident follows the ADFA 2011 "Skype Scandal" where an 18-year-old female cadet claimed she had been filmed while having consensual sex. The footage was broadcast on Skype.
