Caped rapist has town abuzz

Malacca (The Star/ANN) - Talk is rife among locals that a supernatural being is targeting women in the city following an incident where a dark figure wearing Batman attire trespassed into a female dormitory and raped a 19-year-old college student.

The victim, from Kuala Lumpur, was raped on Wednesday night while she was alone in her room.

However, State Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo scoffed at the claims made by certain quarters that the figure was a supernatural being.

He has called for a thorough investigation into the crime.

"How could Batman or a ghost enter a female hostel and commit rape? This is the work of a human who dons the fictional superhero's attire to avoid being detected," he said.

Gan said a manhunt should be organised to nab the perpetrator as he might prey upon other students.

In her police report on Thursday, the victim said she was surfing the Internet at about 8.15pm in her hostel room when the mysterious figure wearing the Batman suit appeared at her side.

She said that before she could scream, the figure gagged her with a handkerchief and she blacked out.

After a few hours, the victim regained consciousness and found herself lying naked on the floor with piercing pain in her private parts.

A medical check-up the next day revealed that she was raped.

Gan said the safety of students was of utmost importance as such a crime had previously occurred here.

On April 25 last year, an unemployed man was sentenced to 44 years' jail and ordered to be given 16 strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court for breaking into a college dormitory and raping and robbing a 19-year-old student.

Meanwhile, Malacca deputy CID chief Supt R. Gunarajan said his men had initiated investigations into two sexually-related offences involving disabled females.

In the first report lodged on Thursday, a 22-year-old woman from Merlimau alleged that her mentally-challenged sister was raped by a neighbour.

The sister claimed that her 24-year-old sibling had complained of pain in her lower abdomen since October last year.

When the victim complained of the same pain again, the woman decided to take her for a medical check-up at a government clinic on Thursday.

The medical officer there told her that her sibling was seven months' pregnant.

In the second case, a 26-year-old with learning difficulties alleged she was gang-raped by four men on Wednesday.

In her report, the victim from Taman Rumpun Bahagia claimed that she befriended a man at the Sentral bus terminal and he invited her to his home for a meal.

The woman alleged that upon reaching the man's home in Kampung Musai, his friends dragged her into the house and took turns to rape her.
