More sex crimes by soldiers

IN SOUTH Korea, the number of sexual violence cases committed by soldiers against underage people since January 2006 has exceeded 200, raising concerns in the military, government data showed on Monday.

Of the 210 cases, 100 were rapes, according to the data the Ministry of National Defense submitted to Representative Sim Dae Pyung of the People First Union. The number of cases committed by Army personnel was 178 while 25 were committed by Navy personnel and 7 by Air Force members.

The number of sexual assault cases against underage people, committed by Army soldiers, was 37 in 2006, 34 in 2007, 41 in 2008, 48 in 2009 and 18 as of June this year. The number of rape cases committed by Army soldiers was 19 in 2006, 16 in 2007, 16 in 2008, 26 in 2009 and 13 as of June this year.

Between the same period a total of 60 crimes committed by Army soldiers involving underage prostitution, have been reported. The number was 13 in 2006, 14 in 2007, 12 in 2008 and 16 in 2009.

'The data suggested that the situation in the military is very serious. The ministry needs to craft comprehensive measures to fundamentally root out such crimes,' Mr Sim said in a statement.

The number of cases in which a soldier has sexually harassed another solider of the same sex between January 2006 and June this year, is 218. The number was 45 in 2006, 56 in 2007, 55 in 2008, 41 in 2009 and 21 as of June this year. -- KOREA HERALD/ANN
