The young man thought he had found a friend.
The 17-year-old girl he met on an online chatroom called Alamak.com was friendly. Very friendly, in fact.
Within a month, their online chats had moved on to video chats, which then turned risque. She started stripping for him.
He did the same, but that one session of cyber titillation ended up with him being terrorised for nine months and $97,000 poorer.
While he had taken off his clothes and performed what police described as 'compromising acts' for the girl, her boyfriend had recorded him doing so.
The couple then blackmailed him. They said he had to hand over money or they would put the clip online.
He parted with $97,000 in more than 80 transactions to prevent them from doing so.
He was one of five victims of the couple, who were arrested in an early morning raid at a Marsiling Drive flat on Tuesday. Two others were also nabbed in that raid.
Later in the afternoon, another two accomplices were arrested in Ang Mo Kio.
Police believe the girl and her boyfriend masterminded the scam, while the four others arrested had allowed them to use their bank accounts to receive money from the victims.
Unlike previous Internet love scams, which targeted mostly women, the latest con was aimed at men.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Superintendent Chua Chuan Seng, commander of the Ang Mo Kio Police Division that cracked the case, said that men were increasingly becoming targets.
The couple started their scam in February last year, and at least five people are believed to have fallen for her charms and stripped.
Three made police reports. All are unmarried Singaporean men in their 20s. One is a student, and the other two are working. The fourth and fifth victims were discovered after the police computer forensics team found their information in the four laptops confiscated during on Tuesday's raid.
Besides the 22-year-old victim who lost $97,000, another victim is said to have paid the couple less than $500. A third did not pay the $8,000 the pair demanded and went to the police instead.
Deputy Superintendent Aileen Yap, deputy head of investigation at the Ang Mo Kio Police Division, said that in all the cases, the teenage girl would befriend her victims on Alamak.com, an online chatroom headquartered in Singapore.
She would then build a relationship with them before suggesting that they do 'something exciting'. She would undress to encourage them to do the same.
Unknown to the victims, her boyfriend would be filming this on a mobile phone.
The 22-year-old victim was extorted right after his stripping session. His video chat with the teenager was interrupted by her boyfriend, who appeared on his video screen brandishing the phone and threatening to circulate the clip online if he did not pay $5,000.
Out of fear, he complied.
Over the next nine months, the boyfriend would telephone the victim, pretending to be her brother, father and once, even her lawyer, to extort more money.
Each time, the victim would transfer sums ranging from $200 to $8,000 to their bank accounts. But on Sunday, he finally got tired of paying and went to the police.
When The Straits Times visited the Marsiling Drive flat where four people were arrested, neighbours said the four had kept mostly to themselves.
A neighbour said she had seen the police on her way to work at 5am. Two men and two women were lined up against the wall of the three-room flat, she said.
The two young women, she added, were 'very pretty, with long hair'.
A housewife who lives on the same floor said a middle-aged divorcee has been living in the flat with his son for about six years.
Police have frozen all seven bank accounts used in the scam.
Superintendent Chua said the police believes there are other similar syndicates around.
'Anyone can become a victim of such a ploy,' he said. 'You shouldn't put yourself in a vulnerable position because you don't really know who you are interacting with over the Internet.'

The terrified victim stayed on with him till Nov 30, 2009, when she confided in her brother, who alerted their parents. A police report was made.
On Tuesday, the man, now 22 years old, was placed on probation for 18 months and ordered to perform 80 hours of community service. He also has to remain home between 10pm and 6am. His parents signed a $5,000 bond as a guarantee for his good behaviour.
The court ordered that the victim's identity not be revealed.

Man posed as doctor to molest schoolgirls
A serial sexual offender pretended to be a doctor to earn the trust of seven young girls before he abused them at staircase landings.
The then human resource manager sometimes carried a thermometer, surgical gloves or what appeared to be a stethoscope to look the part in the incidents which occurred from at least 2004 until his arrest on June 15, 2010. The victims were between nine and 12 years old.
Ng Ban Keong, now jobless, would ask some of them for directions, and get them to lead him to the unit he claimed to be looking for.
He would then molest or sexually assault them while pretending to perform medical check-ups.
On Friday, the 55-year-old father of two pleaded guilty in a district court to three charges of molestation and one of sexual penetration of a minor.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Gail Wong said Ng, who was afflicted with erectile dysfunction in 2002, committed the offences and watched Japanese pornographic movies to satisfy his sexual urges.
On Sept 13, 2004, he asked an 11-year-old girl to show him the way to a flat on Clementi Avenue 4. He claimed to be a doctor looking for a schoolgirl who was absent from a health check.
At a staircase landing, he took out a thermometer and what appeared to be a stethoscope. After she had unbuttoned the top button of her school blouse, he pressed her breasts on the pretext of checking for 'lumps'.
When he lifted her skirt under the pretext of doing further checks, she said no. But he assured her and pressed the lower part of her stomach several times.
Claiming to be 'Dr Tan' from Clementi Polyclinic, Ng similarly lured a 10-year-old girl to a staircase landing in September 2005 and molested her.
Another victim, aged nine, was walking home on Oct 26, 2009, when Ng, again posing as a doctor, asked her for directions. At a staircase landing, he blindfolded and molested her.
He took her to another block on Sims Drive, where he sexually assaulted her while she was blindfolded.
On May 21, 2010, he alighted from the same bus as an 11-year-old schoolgirl on Victoria Street. He spoke to her and found out that she was from a nearby school. He lied that he was a doctor instructed by her principal to do a check-up for her school.
He led her to a staircase landing in the Golden Landmark Shopping Centre carpark, where he touched her private parts. He then blindfolded her with a handkerchief and sexually abused her.
Seeking a total sentence of 12 years, DPP Wong argued that there were a number of aggravating factors in the case which warranted the stiff sentence.
She said Ng exploited vulnerable young girls, was a serial offender over a prolonged period and deceived the victims into believing he was a doctor.
The offences showed an escalation in the severity of the offending and increased risk posed by Ng to the public. He had a clear sexual interest in prepubescent females, and posed a significant risk to the victims.
Ng's lawyers Subhas Anandan and Sunil Sudheesan asked for time to prepare a mitigation plea and consider the DPP's submissions. Mr Anandan will be raising the question of whether the district court has the power to pass a sentence exceeding seven years as the limit in the old Criminal Procedure Code was up to seven years.
The new CPC provides that a district court may pass a jail sentence of up to 10 years.
In this case, Ng has consented to the proceedings to be tried under the new CPC.
District Judge Roy Neighbour adjourned the case to March 23. Ng was also charged with molesting three other girls. He faced a total of six more charges, which will be considered during sentencing.

Ex-social worker jailed for touching teen inappropriately
A former youth programme coordinator was jailed a year and eight months on Wednesday for touching the private parts of a 14-year-old girl.
Cheng Chin Shen, 31, was then working for a non-profit voluntary welfare organisation that caters to the development of children and teenagers.
He had pleaded guilty in December 2011. A district court heard then that the girl became a member in mid-2010 and visited the centre about thrice a week to study and play games with friends.
Cheng befriended her and kept in contact through online and phone messages. On Dec 26, 2010, they were chatting about sex-related matters on Facebook when she accepted his invitation to visit his flat the next day. The following morning, she met him at coffee shop near his Jurong West home and they had breakfast.
They then went up to his flat. There was no one home and he took her into his bedroom. Although she scolded him for placing his hand on her thigh and breasts, he persisted and managed to pull her shorts and panties down. He then touched her private parts.
The teen told some friends about what occurred and eventually the management of the centre came to know of it. When confronted, Cheng admitted his wrongdoing and was sacked.
The girl, now 16 years old, cannot be identified as she is a victim of a sexual offence.
Asking the court to impose a deterrent sentence, deputy public prosecutor Ramesh Ethan Ananda said that Cheng had abused his position at the centre.
Cheng, who is about 1.6m tall and plump, shook his head when the sentence was passed. He could have been jailed up to 10 years or fined up to $10,000, or to both, for the offence.

Cab driver arrested for robbery rape
A taxi driver who says he is HIV-positive has been arrested in Bangkok for allegedly robbing and raping at least 10 passengers, Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy chief Saroj Phromcharoen police said on Monday.
Police received a report from a couple who hired Kaew Sangmuang, the 43-year-old cab driver, to transport them and their belongings, including a notebook computer, to their condominium in Ratchathewi district on Feb 15, Pol Maj Gen Saroj said.
The couple said the cab driver, after arriving at the condominium, told them that he had taken out all of their belongings. After the taxi left the couple discovered that their notebook computer was missing.
Mr Kaew on Feb 18 phoned the couple, demanding 6,000 baht in return for their notebook computer. They agreed to a meeting at a shopping mall in Lad Prao on the same day.
The couple then reported what happened to police and the cab driver was arrested at the shopping mall that day.
Pol Maj Gen Saroj said police found nine ID cards, two bank passbooks and other documents belonging to other people, three pawn tickets, two ATM cards and 22 SIM cards inside his taxi.
Mr Kaew confessed to police that he used a knife to threaten passengers and had raped at least 10 women. He then forced them to withdraw cash from their accounts via ATM machines, took the money from them and drove away.
Pol Maj Gen Saroj said the taxi driver also admitted he tricked female passengers into having sex with him. He first created a sense of trust by giving them ATM cards stolen from his previous victims. Later, when the women went to the ATM machines to withdraw money he would drive away with their money and belongings.
Mr Kaew said he would then sell or pawn the stolen belongings.
The cab driver also confessed that he is HIV-positive but claimed he always used a condom with his victims.
He usually drove his cab from 5am to 8pm around Huay Kwang, Ratchada and Lad Prao, the deputy metropolitan police chief said.

Maid raped and thrown from flat survives ordeal
SINGAPORE - In 2009, she was raped twice, dragged by her hair from room to room, poked and cut with a pair of scissors, strangled with raffia string and finally thrown out the window of a second storey flat.
The 26-year-old Indonesian maid survived the ordeal and will now testify in court against her alleged 42-year-old assailant.
The suspect, who is now 44, will not be named to protect the identity of the victim, who is now 29.
In the first day of the High Court trial yesterday, the prosecution said it would be calling 49 witnesses for the case including police officers, forensic scientists and the victim herself.
The accused faces five charges - two of aggravated rape and one each of attempted murder, causing hurt with a dangerous weapon, and trespassing.
On the morning of Sept 9, 2009 there was a power trip in the maid's employers' home. The suspect, who is also her neighbour, helped fix it.
The maid's employers later left the house at about 1.30pm leaving her alone at home. Her neighbour then rang the doorbell and asked if he could watch her eat lunch. She refused and closed the door.
While she was doing her chores after lunch, the power supply tripped for the second time that day.
She opened the door and gate of the flat to go out and reset the circuit box.
Her neighbour, who is a former security guard, approached her and asked her what had happened.
In the midst of the maid's explanation, he moved in front of her and pushed her into the flat before closing the door.
She tried to escape but was caught by the man.
The man dragged the struggling and screaming maid to the master bedroom where he raped her.
The New Paper reported that she struggled but, overpowering her, he dragged her into the children's bedroom, where he allegedly raped her a second time on the floor.
The man then dragged her to the kitchen, where he took a pair of scissors from a drawer and placed it against her neck.
He allegedly round raffia string around her neck and tried to strangle her. She fainted and when she regained consciousness, she was on a hospital bed.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Charlene Tay reportedly told the High Court that the assailant had also poked her in the abdomen and cut her chin with the scissors before throwing her out of the kitchen window.
Two policemen found her lying face-up at the bottom of the Central-East block. She was covered with a piece of Batik cloth and groaning in pain.
The accused was arrested near another block of flats in the neighbourhood, reported The Straits Times.
DPP Tay told the court that police officers will testify that they found clothes scattered around and liquid, strands of hair and blood stains on the floor when they entered the flat.
Forensic scientists will testify that a DNA profile obtained from the maid's body, clothes and a comforter in the master bedroom, was a match for the accused.
The victim's blood was found on the scissors, while the DNA profile from the string matched both the suspect's and the maid's.
The six-day trial continues today.
Of the five charges, attempted murder carried the heaviest penalty - a life term and caning if the accused is convicted.
If he is found guilty of rape, the man faces a jail term of between eight and 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane on each charge.

Proposal to marry off victim and alleged rapist rejected
KUCHING: The mother of a rape victim was shocked when the suspect’s mother lodged a police report against her for not allowing her son to marry the victim.
The 44-year-old mother claimed her 11-year-old daughter was raped by the woman’s 21-year-old son on February 12.
It was reported that when the girl woke up the next morning she found herself in the man’s house with the man sleeping beside her.
She was brought to Sarawak General Hospital for medical check-up and was confirmed to have been raped.
Police arrested the suspect in the evening of the same day when a police report against him was lodged.
After that, the suspect’s mother tried to get the victim’s mother to agree to a marriage between her son and the victim.
She went to the girl’s house on February 16 and 19 with the hope that the mother would agree.
“The suspect’s mother was just trying to get her son out of trouble. What type of mother would I be if I destroy my daughter’s future by allowing her to marry someone who raped her,” said the victim’s mother.
“At her age, she does not even have a clue about marriage. It’s not that I insist that justice must prevail.
“My daughter got raped and I have the right to determine what is best for her. I need to protect her.”

Cheap flights lure Chinese prostitutes to Malaysia

The daily quoted a Bukit Aman anti-vice, gaming and secret societies spokesman as saying that these women who had valid travel documents and student visas, blended in Chinese-populated areas with ease as the food, living environment, language and dialects were similar to those in China.
'Besides locals, foreigners also prefer them due to lower charges. Each sex session costs between RM150 (S$62.30) and RM200,' reported the daily.

43-year-old man jailed for having sex with minor
SINGAPORE: A 43-year-old man was sentenced to three months' jail on Thursday for having sex with a minor.
Chang Liang Chieh Peter Gerald was convicted of having sex with a Vietnamese girl who was on a social visit pass. The girl cannot be identified as she was 16 years old at the time of the offence.
The two had met in May last year at a restaurant in Joo Chiat.
They were not acquainted but Chang approached the girl and introduced himself.
Both of them had dinner together and exchanged telephone numbers.
During their chat, Chang asked the girl if she provided sexual services to which she affirmed.
Chang then asked the girl her age and she told him that she was 19 years old.
At the first meeting, Chang paid her S$100 even though they did not seal the deal as Chang was tired.
On May 25, they bumped into each other in Joo Chiat again.
Chang tried to confirm the girl's age again and she insisted she was 19.
At this encounter, they went to a lodging house and were later caught in the act.
During mitigation, Chang's lawyer said the victim had misrepresented her age to Chang more than once. It was difficult to ascertain the age of the victim, especially when she claimed her passport was with someone else.
Chang's lawyer urged the district judge to give a custodial sentence of not more than four months.
But the prosecution noted that the accused did not pursue the matter of the age further and just took the victim's word.
The prosecution added that the maximum jail term for having sex with a person under the age of 18 is seven years.
Chang could also have been fined or sentenced to both.
In delivering the sentence, the district judge took into consideration that the accused did ask the victim for her age.
He said such behaviour must be discouraged which is why it deserves a custodial term.

Man sneaks in and molests woman in her own home
A man was charged in a district court on Wednesday with restraining and molesting a 22-year-old woman in her bedroom last month.
Muhammad Idzuan Arifin, 23, is believed to have sneaked into the victim's Yishun flat through the unlocked main door, and allegedly covered the woman's mouth, kissed her on the neck and stroked her thighs and groin area at about 4am on Jan 21.
During the alleged incident, the woman put up a struggle and cried for help.
She and members of her family gave chase but lost the intruder along the way.
The well-built Idzuan, clad in a blue T-shirt with the word 'SUPER', was arrested by police along Yishun Street 21 on Monday.
He will be remanded for further investigation until next Wednesday.
If convicted, he can be given a jail term of between two and 10 years, and caned.

The incident happened at about 3am on 6 January 2011 as the 33-year-old singer was chatting with friends and customers after her delivering a performance at a KTV lounge in Clarke Quay.
The singer had been playing games on her mobile phone when a male friend playfully flung an ice cube at her which happened to land inside her clothing.
She took to throwing ice cubes back at her friend and unintentionally hit Zheng Guo Hui (36, contractor).
Zheng wanted to take "revenge" and got a friend to restrain the singer by holding down her arms.
He then took an ice cube, reached into her bra and rubbed it on her breasts.
The woman screamed and managed to free herself, knocking over a table and several glasses in the process.
Upset and humiliated, she made a police report soon afterwards.
For outraging a modesty of a woman, Zheng faces a combination of 2 years' jail, caning and a fine. He will be sentenced on 27 February.

Jefferson County rape suspect featured on Facebook page captured in Ohio
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Alabama - A Jefferson County man wanted on outstanding rape charge who taunted lawmen this week on a Facebook site is now in custody.
U.S. Marshals took Dustin McCombs into custody today in Ohio, said Chief Deputy Randy Christian.
The U.S. Marshal's Gulf Coast Regional Task for in Birmingham shared information with their counterparts in Ohio who tracked down the fugitive.
McComb's was featured on the Jefferson County Sheriff Department's Facebook page as its "Creep of the Week" because of an outstanding forcible rape charge.
McCombs apparently decided that was a challenge, taking up a posting duel with the department on Facebook, according to the website Gizmodo.
He wasn't shy, saying it was a good thing he'd left the state, calling the victim a liar, and asking if he could surrender in St. Clair County once he had a lawyer because he'd heard it was nicer there, according to some of the exchange published on websites.
The exchange was later taken down.
Sheriff's officials said they are pleased McCombs is now in custody.
"This is a pretty silly-acting individual to be facing such a serious charge," Christian said. " Of course we are happy to let him know that, yes, we can catch you, but more than anything we are happy that maybe his victim is a step closer to getting justice."

Crystal said: "I'm scared there will be a lot of angry men out there reading this but I have to tell the truth.
"A lot of people will think I've lied to those I've had sex with. But I don't feel I have because I'm a woman and my past is all behind me.
"I don't want any man I've ever been with to doubt his sexuality now because of this. They didn't know they were sleeping with somebody like me.
"I'm now just like any other girl who wants to enjoy my life after many years without the right body.
"Now I've got the body I want to use it all the time."
She added: "I wanted to do a photoshoot with The Sun and look really girlie and sexy so people can see I am a woman and not say I look like a fella."
Crystal shocked viewers of ITV's This Morning show on Tuesday by revealing her voracious appetite for sex.
But from an early age she sensed she was a female trapped in a male body — a condition known as gender dysphoria.
She began secretly trying on her mum's clothes as a teenage boy and progressed to going on dates in drag.
She realised she yearned "to fully become a woman" and in 2002 began having hormone and laser treatment to remove body hair and develop a 38B bust.
After regular counselling sessions, she went ahead with full gender reassignment surgery — offered by the NHS in "serious" cases — seven years ago.
She was issued with a Gender Recognition Certificate after the operation, which allowed her to legally change her birth certificate to reflect her new name and sex.
Former shop worker Crystal, of Brighton, East Sussex, has bedded the bulk of her lovers since she took her decision to become a woman. She admitted she had told only a few she was born male. She said:
"I didn't try to hide anything but I wasn't specifically asked about my past or the fact I wasn't fully a woman for some of that time.
I've slept with lots of men who may have been married or had a girlfriend or been to prison, but they didn't tell me about those aspects of their lives.
I slept with a hell of a lot of men before my operation but once I had the body I'd always wanted my sex drive went crazy.
I was sleeping with up to seven men a day and even now I can't go more than 24 hours without sex.
About three months after my surgery I went to a swingers' party and had sex with ten different men.
And when I was running a snack bar at a golf club just outside Brighton I would lock the cabin door and have sex with customers I got friendly with. Some of the women golfers didn't like me much.
I did sometimes feel bad when I found out some men were in relationships. But I was single and wasn't cheating on anybody."
She added: "I no longer refer to myself as a post-op transsexual because I needed to put that label behind me to move on.
"I haven't come as far as I have to be reminded all the time.
"Having this secret has held me back in the past but now it's out I feel I can take on the world. I think about sex all day." Crystal kept quiet about her male past when she first revealed her sex addiction in another newspaper, which compared her obsession to the theme of new movie Shame.
The story was taken up by This Morning. But as she talked to hosts Eamonn Holmes and Holly Willoughby, viewers gasped when Holmes casually suggested she might as well make a living by charging for sex like a prostitute.
The remark triggered a storm of protest on the internet. And Crystal told The Sun: "I was stunned that he came out with that on live TV." The 6ft brunette went on to describe how her parents must have realised her gender dilemma from the time she was a small boy. She said: "My dad bought me a skirt for my fourth birthday.
"When I was a teenager and my parents went out shopping I would stay at home so I could try on my mum's clothes.
"One day when I was 14 I was at the swimming pool with my mum and feeling very depressed and she just told me, 'Don't worry, I know what's going on. You're not gay — you're just not in the right body'." Crystal left her home town of Bridgwater, Somerset, at 16 and later began working in clubs in Blackpool.
She said: "I first had sex when I was 17 or 18. I didn't feel it was right because I was in a man's body. But I was at the age when you want to experiment sexually and it was the only way I could.
"All the men I had sex with knew I was born male, though, until after my surgery.
"I met most in bars and clubs on the gay scene. I wasn't gay but they were the only places in which I felt comfortable.
"I was sleeping with a different man every night then and having a brilliant time. But I knew I wanted to fully become a woman so when I moved to Brighton a couple of years later, I started the process of gender reassignment."

18 yr old charged for raping underage girl
GOMBAK: An 18-year-old was charged in a Selayang Sessions Court here with six counts of raping a teenager.
Muhammad Hairil Anwar Aziz, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to all charges.
He allegedly raped the same teenager six times between March 2010 and Nov 2011.
She was 14 years old at the time of the first alleged offence.
DPP Rohaiza Hamzah requested bail be set at RM5,000 for each charge, totalling RM30,000.
Session Court Judge Maziah Joary Tajudin set bail at RM18,000 and next mention for March 5.

Man swallows dentures during sex and dies
(THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A 74-YEAR-OLD man died after he accidentally swallowed his dentures during sex with a 62-year-old prostitute in Taiwan, reported Nanyang Siang Pau.
The man, known as Chen, had been living with a close female friend in New Taipei City after separating from his wife many years ago. The prostitute said she had sex with Chen for 30 minutes.
She said Chen had got up from the bed, paid her and was about to put on his clothes when he suddenly collapsed. 'He fell back onto the bed. His eyes were open but he was not moving although I shook his body and tried to wake him up,' said the woman, who called the rescue team.
Chen was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Doctors later found his dentures stuck in his throat.

US teacher held in grim cockroaches, semen abuse case
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A former teacher has been arrested for allegedly taking photos of blindfolded and gagged students with roaches on their faces and spoons of semen to their mouths, US police said on Tuesday.
Mark Berndt, 61, who taught for more than 30 years at an elementary school in east Los Angeles, faces multiple charges of committing lewd acts on nearly two dozen children, prosecutors said.
'I am sickened and horrified by the behavior of Mark Berndt,' said LA Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy after 23 criminal counts were filed involving 7 to 10 year-old children allegedly abused between 2008 and 2010.
'This individual and his conduct do not reflect on the quality of the teachers who work so hard on behalf of the students in the Los Angeles Unified School District,' he said.
Berndt was removed from teaching duty as soon as the allegations surfaced in January 2011, after more than 40 photos of children in a classroom, with blindfolds and tape covering their mouths, were reported by a film processor.
Berndt had his arm around the children or a hand over their mouths, said a LA Sheriff's Department statement.
Some of the photos 'depicted girls with what appeared to be a blue plastic spoon, filled with an unknown clear/white liquid substance, up to their mouths as if they were going to ingest the substance,' it said.
DNA tests concluded the substance was Berndt's semen. 'There are also photos of children with large live Madagascar-type cockroaches on their faces and mouths,' said the statement.
More than 100 similar photos were found at his home, while police also 'recovered was a DVD of film depicting adult sexual bondage activity which mirrored the bondage-type photos of the children.' Berndt is due to be arraigned in court in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
