Ukrainian girl dies after horror gang rape

A Ukrainian teenage girl died Thursday three weeks after being set on fire in a gang rape attack by youths which shocked the nation and raised doubts about the competence of police.

Oksana Makar, 18, was raped by three men in their early 20s, strangled with a cord, burned and left for dead in an attack in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv, investigators have said.

The victim was found by a passer-by after she was dumped by her attackers at an abandoned construction site. She was hospitalised in a critical condition with burns over 55 percent of her body, requiring the amputation of one of her arms.

She died of her injuries in a specialist hospital in the eastern city of Donetsk where she had been taken after her rescue, the clinic announced.

Her heart stopped beating after she suffered a pulmonary haemorrhage and she died despite three attempts to resuscitate her, the chief doctor of the Donetsk Burns centre, Emil Fistal, told AFP.

He said the fact she was able to survive for three weeks since the attack, which occurred on March 9 or 10 according to various sources, had only been possible due to intense treatment and therapy.

"Imagine. She was strangled and they (the attackers) thought she had died. So they burned her. She was lying there 10 hours in the freezing cold and inhaled the by-products of the burning," Fistal said.

President Viktor Yanukovych sent condolences to her relatives while Prime Minister Mykola Azarov vowed that the attackers would be punished "without compromise."

"Millions of Ukrainians believed that Oksana would survive and prayed for her, offering blood, buying medicine," Azarov said.

The case has caused a public outcry in Ukraine, exposing incompetence by the law-enforcement authorities and the extent of social problems in industrial cities like Mykolayiv which are riddled with drugs and AIDS.

Ukrainian media had alleged that the suspected attackers -- two of whom were initially allowed to go free -- are the sons of parents with strong connections to leading local officials.

The mother of one suspect used to be the head of a district in the Mykolayiv region, the regional interior ministry confirmed, prompting allegations the authorities had been trying to keep a lid on the whole affair.

Meanwhile, Makar's mother controversially posted a harrowing video of Oksana in hospital on YouTube where she raises up the bloodied stump of her arm and, apparently barely able to speak, says she feels "awful".

In another disturbing video that was leaked to Ukrainian media, one of the suspects is allegedly shown calmly relating to investigators how the three successively raped Oksana and then killed her when she started threatening to call police.

"She was wailing, waving her hands and I raped her. She did not calm down and I decided to strangle her," said the suspect in the video, adding that he first used his bare hands and then a cord when this did not work.

After changing their clothes, he said the three went to a kebab kiosk nearby.

"We sat, we smoked, and then we parted," said the suspect, whose face was blocked out in the video.

The three suspects were all arrested soon after the body was discovered but two were then released, prompting thousands to rally in protest in Mykolayiv and other smaller demonstrations across the country.

All three men were again placed under arrest on March 13. Ukrainian interior ministry spokesman Volodymyr Polishchuk told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency that all three had now been charged with premeditated rape and murder.

According to the interior ministry, several officials from the police and local prosecutors were fired and reprimanded for initially letting the suspects go free.

If convicted, the three face between 15 years to life in jail, although the brutality of the crime has renewed public debate about the use of the death penalty which was abolished in Ukraine over a decade ago.

An average of 2 people reported missing daily in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The number of cases involving missing people has increased to a worrying level, with an average of two people reported missing daily nationwide.

Federal CID Director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said that between 2008 and last year, a total of 7,662 people were reported missing nationwide. From this number, a staggering 3,226 were teenagers between 14 and 17 years old.

'A further breakdown revealed that 1,202 were girls,' he said in an interview at the Grand Dorsett hotel in Subang Jaya on Tuesday.

Comm Bakri revealed that from the 3,226 cases, a total of 1,742 teens returned home while another 1,484 are still classified as missing.

He said more recent statistics showed that since last year, a total of 1,097 cases of missing people were reported nationwide but only 406 were considered solved after they were found or returned home.

He believed there were cases where the missing person returned home but the police were not notified and thus the case was still considered as 'under investigation'.

Comm Bakri said their investigations revealed that most missing people cases occur when the 'missing' person runs away with their loves, are influenced by their friends, or want freedom from home and their restrictive parents.

Man jailed for underage sex with sister in-law

SINGAPORE: A 32—year—old married man was jailed on Tuesday for five years for having sex with his 12—year—old sister—in—law.

He committed the offence while his wife was in hospital after giving birth to their second daughter.

Both the man and the victim cannot be named to protect their identities.

The man, who was found guilty of two charges of underage sex, was a repeat offender.

He had committed a similar offence in 2008 when he had sex with another girl under 16 years old.

He was then given a fine of S$9,000 and three weeks in default imprisonment.

Noting this, Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabrina Choo said the man was "clearly undeterred and went on to redirect his lascivious attention on his young 12—year—old sister—in—law."

The pair engaged in unprotected consensual sex twice in mid—2011 at a flat in the western part of Singapore, where they resided.

Before they had sex, the man would first approach the girl and ask her to join him in watching pornography.

DPP Choo commented the man had "groomed" the girl for sexual activity by doing so.

She added the circumstances of the offences committed by him were "repugnant".

District Judge Chia Wee Kiat, in his sentencing, had harsh words for the man as well.

He said the man had "corrupted her and tempted her with pornography" instead of caring for her well—being as her brother—in—law.

He added the offences were not conducted at a spur of the moment and were a "conscious decision of an adult".

For underage sex, the man could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined.

Man facilitates wife's gang rape in Bengal

wo men have been sent to police custody by a local court in West Bengal's Howrah for allegedly raping a newly-married woman in connivance with her husband, who is absconding, the police said.

"Kartik Das and Raju Prasad were sent to custody by the court for their involvement in gang-raping a 19-year-old married woman. Her husband, who is suspected to have facilitated the crime, is absconding," Howrah Deputy Commissioner of Police Sukesh Jain said.

The woman had married Bappa Ruidas a week before the incident. Das and Prasad, both friends of the husband, came to meet the couple on Wednesday night. After a few minutes, Bappa left the house while the duo forced themselves on the victim, said an officer of Bally police station in the district.

The woman lodged a complaint on Thursday afternoon, following which the two were arrested from the area late at night. Bappa has been named as an accused in the FIR and the police are looking for him, added the officer.

Model teacher' sexually abused 3 pupils

He was a model teacher at a school in the east, popular among his colleagues and his pupils, and voted 'most caring teacher' by his young charges.

He also bagged several school awards, received letters of praise from parents and sat on the school's disciplinary committee to handle its most difficult pupils.

But on Monday, it was the 38-year-old bachelor's turn to be disciplined in a court of law - for molesting two boys and performing oral sex on a third in 2009.

He will be jailed for 10 years and given six strokes of the cane for the offences that were committed between March and July of that year.

He racked up 11 charges of molestation and sexual penetration of a minor, but pleaded guilty to two counts each of molestation and sexual penetration; the other charges were taken into consideration in the sentencing.

Neither he nor his victims, the oldest of whom was aged 11, can be named.

His deeds came to light on July 17 that year, when a pupil complained to the school's principal about being molested by this teacher.

Three victims were uncovered.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sellakumaran Sellamuthoo said the teacher took an eight-year-old to a computer laboratory on July 10 that year, and there, he offered his Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) to the boy to play.

While the boy was engrossed in the computer game, the teacher unzipped and pulled down the boy's shorts and underwear, and performed oral sex on him.

He then told the boy not to talk about this to anyone. Three days later, he did it again to this boy in a men's toilet cubicle.

The court heard that four months before that, the teacher had offered another boy aged 11 the PSP, and put his hand into the boy's shorts.

Some time in May, he asked a third victim, then eight, to sit at the back of the class. He then sat next to the boy, rubbed his thigh and touched his bottom from the outside of his shorts.

Citing aggravating factors, DPP Sellakumaran told District Judge Liew Thiam Leng that the victims were young and unable to defend themselves, as he was their teacher and in a position of authority.

The DPP added that the teacher had abused his position of trust and responsibility, used his PSP as a lure and sought to morally corrupt his victims by buying their silence.

The prosecutor said the abuse had taken place repeatedly in school, a place that should have been considered safe.

A former colleague of the teacher, who was in the school at the time of the incidents, told The Straits Times that he and his colleagues were shocked when told what the teacher had done.

'We couldn't believe he would do something like that. He looked like a decent goody-two-shoes, but was never awkward with people. We liked him and the pupils loved him as he had such a way with them,' he said.

This colleague added that when the teacher suddenly stopped showing up, and then resigned, many suspected something was up.

The teacher, who had no lawyer, could have been jailed for up to 20 years, fined or caned on each charge of sexual penetration. For outrage of modesty, he could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or dealt any combination of these penalties on each charge.

Nobody from his family turned up in court on Monday.

Young widow robbed and raped

20-year-old widow was not only robbed of her mobile phone and RM150 but was also raped repeatedly before she managed to escape.

The victim was walking to a nearby stall to buy food at Bukit Raja, Bandar Baru Klang, at about 10.30pm on Saturday when two men on a motorcycle approached her.

They ordered the victim to surrender her belongings and threatened her using a knife.

Klang Utara OCPD Supt Shukor Sulong said the suspects then dragged her to a nearby oil palm plantation where she was raped.

He said when they reached the plantation, four friends of the suspects came in a car.

“There were six men but only two of them raped the victim,” he said.

Police have identified the suspects but no arrest has been made yet.

Supt Shukor said they believe the suspects are from the same area as they were seen by the victim several times.

Man molested girl, 10, while her brothers watched

A freelance musician showed a video of an obscene act to a 10-year-old girl and molested her while her two younger brothers watched.

On Friday, Harry Shawn Fernandez, 42, was found guilty of stripping and molesting the girl at a staircase landing in Woodlands. For this, and a separate charge of molesting a 41-year-old woman, he was sentenced to 26 months in jail and four strokes of the cane.

The court heard that on Aug 12 last year, Fernandez followed the girl and her eight- and six-year-old brothers into a lift on their way home from school. As they were walking, he called out to them from behind.

He showed the girl a video on a mobile phone, and when the siblings tried to leave, he dragged them to a staircase landing. He removed the girl's clothes and re-enacted what was shown in the video on the girl while her brothers watched.

When he was done, he told her to put on her clothes and asked all three to follow him to the first floor. The girl refused. Fernandez let them go but said: 'Do not tell anybody. If not, I'll kill you.'

The three ran home in tears and told their grandmother and an aunt about the incident. The police subsequently identified and arrested Fernandez on Sept 29.

In submissions to the court, Deputy Public Prosecutor Toh Puay San stressed that the victim was very young and that Fernandez had violated her modesty. The film had also corrupted her young mind.

He was sentenced to 18 months and four strokes of the cane for outraging the girl's modesty, three months' jail for showing her an obscene film, and four months' jail for threatening to kill her.

On Jan 21, Fernandez molested a woman at a Bencoolen Street hotel. He was sentenced to four months' jail. The prosecution said the offence was committed while he was out on bail for the earlier case. Three of his four sentences will run consecutively. Three other charges were taken into account.

US Actor Rapes & Robs Tokyo Woman with Chloroform

An American actor has been arrested for robbing and raping a Japanese woman, having broken into her house and drugged her with chloroform.

Tokyo’s organised crime squad arrested a 25-year-old unemployed American going by the name of “Alexander De La Fuente,” charging him with rape and robbery in connection with a crime committed in June 2011.

In this incident he is said to have broken into the Ota ward apartment of a woman in her twenties, waited for her to return from work and then forcibly drugged her into unconsciousness using chloroform.

He then proceeded to rape her whilst she was unconscious, injuring her in the process, and afterwards made off with ¥5,000 in cash, as well as cash cards and other valuables.

The woman apparently had the misfortune to first meet her assailant 18 months prior to the attack, when he struck up a conversation with her on a train, but during the attack he was masked and she did not recognise him.

The crime finally came to light after he was arrested for robbing a Yokohama convenience store in January, and DNA tests revealed a match with DNA evidence found at the scene of the 2011 crime. He admits the charges.

Police say he arrived in Japan in November of 2008, initially finding work as an actor.

Media reports describe him as a “former talent” and an extra in various Japanese drama and variety programmes – although it would seem he is either an exceedingly obscure one or else appeared under an alias, as the only Japanese online mentions of anyone under his name are in connection with his arrest.

Student cried 'Batman' rape to mask caper

MALACCA - A probe into the rape allegation made by a 19-year-old college girl has revealed that she created the "Batman" story to cover up her own immoral activity.

State CID chief Asst Comm Raja Shahrom Raja Abdullah confirmed receiving the report from the girl but upon investigation it was discovered the report was lodged to conceal her immoral activity after her family members got to know of it.

"Police are still investigating the report lodged by the girl and for now we hope the locals will not believe the existence of this caped rapist.

"She deliberately lodged a police report to cover her wrongdoings due family pressure," ACP Raja Shahrom said in a statement yesterday.

He added preliminary investigations revealed the victim was not raped by a masked and black-attired man as she had claimed.

On Sunday, it was reported that talk was rife among locals that a supernatural being was targeting women in the city following an incident where a dark figure wearing Batman attire trespassed into a female dormitory and raped a 19-year-old college student.

The girl, in her report, claimed she was raped on Wednesday night while she was alone in her room.

Caped rapist has town abuzz

Malacca (The Star/ANN) - Talk is rife among locals that a supernatural being is targeting women in the city following an incident where a dark figure wearing Batman attire trespassed into a female dormitory and raped a 19-year-old college student.

The victim, from Kuala Lumpur, was raped on Wednesday night while she was alone in her room.

However, State Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo scoffed at the claims made by certain quarters that the figure was a supernatural being.

He has called for a thorough investigation into the crime.

"How could Batman or a ghost enter a female hostel and commit rape? This is the work of a human who dons the fictional superhero's attire to avoid being detected," he said.

Gan said a manhunt should be organised to nab the perpetrator as he might prey upon other students.

In her police report on Thursday, the victim said she was surfing the Internet at about 8.15pm in her hostel room when the mysterious figure wearing the Batman suit appeared at her side.

She said that before she could scream, the figure gagged her with a handkerchief and she blacked out.

After a few hours, the victim regained consciousness and found herself lying naked on the floor with piercing pain in her private parts.

A medical check-up the next day revealed that she was raped.

Gan said the safety of students was of utmost importance as such a crime had previously occurred here.

On April 25 last year, an unemployed man was sentenced to 44 years' jail and ordered to be given 16 strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court for breaking into a college dormitory and raping and robbing a 19-year-old student.

Meanwhile, Malacca deputy CID chief Supt R. Gunarajan said his men had initiated investigations into two sexually-related offences involving disabled females.

In the first report lodged on Thursday, a 22-year-old woman from Merlimau alleged that her mentally-challenged sister was raped by a neighbour.

The sister claimed that her 24-year-old sibling had complained of pain in her lower abdomen since October last year.

When the victim complained of the same pain again, the woman decided to take her for a medical check-up at a government clinic on Thursday.

The medical officer there told her that her sibling was seven months' pregnant.

In the second case, a 26-year-old with learning difficulties alleged she was gang-raped by four men on Wednesday.

In her report, the victim from Taman Rumpun Bahagia claimed that she befriended a man at the Sentral bus terminal and he invited her to his home for a meal.

The woman alleged that upon reaching the man's home in Kampung Musai, his friends dragged her into the house and took turns to rape her.

21 years for mum who recorded daughter's rape

SHAH ALAM - A mother of four, who recorded her boyfriend raping her underage daughter, was sentenced to 21 years in jail by the Sessions Court here after she pleaded guilty to abetting him.

The taxi driver boyfriend, Ma Kasim Sirat, 44, was slapped with a 30-year jail term and 15 lashes of the rotan.

The mother, a 30-year-old executive taxi service supervisor, admitted to three counts of abetting her boyfriend, who raped the then 11-year-old girl on three occasions at 203 Level 2, Block E, Blok Apartment Kemuning, Taman Bunga Raya, in Rawang.

The offences were committed between December 2009 and March 2010.

Ma Kasim admitted to three counts of raping the girl at the same place and time.

The girl testified in the trial earlier that the second incident happened on her 12th birthday on Jan 31, 2010.

She said her mother had called her into a room to get a " birthday present".

In the third incident, her mother recorded the rape on her handphone camera.

Yesterday, the mother cried and pleaded to the court for a lenient sentence.

"Saya insaf (I have repented). I hope to be given a second chance to become a good mother to my children," she said.

Ma Kasim told the judge his experience in prison had taught him to change his ways.

"I want to be responsible for her (the victim's mother) and I will marry her when I get out of jail," he said.

Judge Latifah Mohd Tahar sentenced the mother to seven years' imprisonment for each count while Ma Kasim was sentenced to 10 years in jail and five lashes of the rotan for each count. All sentences were ordered to run consecutively.

DPPs Hemy Annerina Hajamydin and R. Kalaiyarasi prosecuted while Ma Kasim and the mother were represented by Roland Engan and M. Hafiz Zainol Abidin respectively.
