Man jailed for underage sex with sister in-law

SINGAPORE: A 32—year—old married man was jailed on Tuesday for five years for having sex with his 12—year—old sister—in—law.

He committed the offence while his wife was in hospital after giving birth to their second daughter.

Both the man and the victim cannot be named to protect their identities.

The man, who was found guilty of two charges of underage sex, was a repeat offender.

He had committed a similar offence in 2008 when he had sex with another girl under 16 years old.

He was then given a fine of S$9,000 and three weeks in default imprisonment.

Noting this, Deputy Public Prosecutor Sabrina Choo said the man was "clearly undeterred and went on to redirect his lascivious attention on his young 12—year—old sister—in—law."

The pair engaged in unprotected consensual sex twice in mid—2011 at a flat in the western part of Singapore, where they resided.

Before they had sex, the man would first approach the girl and ask her to join him in watching pornography.

DPP Choo commented the man had "groomed" the girl for sexual activity by doing so.

She added the circumstances of the offences committed by him were "repugnant".

District Judge Chia Wee Kiat, in his sentencing, had harsh words for the man as well.

He said the man had "corrupted her and tempted her with pornography" instead of caring for her well—being as her brother—in—law.

He added the offences were not conducted at a spur of the moment and were a "conscious decision of an adult".

For underage sex, the man could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined.
