JOLIET (Illinois) - A CONVICTED sex offender has pleaded guilty in the 2004 rape and murder of a 3-year-old Illinois girl whose father was wrongly accused in the crime and later won a multimillion-dollar lawsuit.
Scott Eby pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Will County Circuit Court under a deal that spares him the death penalty. Eby was in prison for a 2005 sexual assault when he was charged in May for Riley Fox's death.
Riley disappeared in June 2004 from her home in Wilmington, a Chicago suburb. Her body was later found in a nearby creek.
Authorities first implicated her father, Kevin Fox, who spent eight months in jail before DNA evidence cleared him. Fox and his wife sued, claiming he was framed. They were awarded US$15.5 million (S$19.9 million), which was later reduced to $8 million.
